The Tale of Lady Sandwich

Exploring the town of Bath was such a wonderful adventure! We started off by walking through the square around the Abbey, then had afternoon tea at the Pump Room. It was so cool to visit the same location and have the same experience as people like Charles Dickens and Jane Austen did. The tea room was so pretty, with its ceiling high windows, crystal chandelier, and view of the Roman baths. We felt so culturally immersed that we role-played as 19th century ladies. My name was Lady Sandwich, an 87-year-old widow with a deep love for food. The servers absolutely thought we were incredibly obnoxious, but they were polite enough to not say anything. While we ate our finger sandwiches and sipped our tea, talking with our likely offensive accents, I thought of all the great minds that sat in this very room. All of the beautiful literature that might have been written here. And I felt like a dumb American.

Next we walked to the Circus and the Crescent. It was such a beautiful day: the sky was so blue, the grass so green, and the architecture so gorgeous. We then took a trail by a park back to the Roman Baths. This was the prettiest view I saw all day, with the gardens and brightly colored gates. When we got to the Roman Baths, we walked through artifacts and reconstructions of different rooms. It was so interesting how they would light fires underneath the floor to warm the room for a sauna-like effect. And I found the medicinal uses of the different baths so fascinating, how they believed the water could cure you of various ailments. Overall, I loved our trip to Bath. The beautiful history and architecture was so incredible to share with my friends. But I do miss Lady Sandwich and I hope she makes an appearance soon.  -Milly Medlock
