Bathing in History: A Day Among the Romans

Walking through Bath felt like stepping back in time in ancient history and seeing all the amazing architecture. Our visit to the Roman Baths and the Pump Room was such a great experience not only was it beautiful and historical, it was also such a great learning experience. I loved how the little phone told the story of each place and got to hear and see what these romans did and used the Bath for.

The Roman Baths themselves were absolutely fascinating. What struck me most wasn’t just the uniqueness of the architecture, but the sophistication of Roman engineering and how they built everything and used it. The Great Bath, still fed by the steaming natural spring water, is so fascinating to me. I was especially intrigued by the sacred spring, where people once tossed in offerings such as coins, curses, and pleas to the goddess Sulis Minerva. It made the space feel not just functional but deeply spiritual. The Romans weren’t just bathing they were participating in a social and religious ritual that connected body and spirit which connected them as a community.

What I didn’t expect was how alive the site still felt. Though the baths are no longer used in the same way, the steam rising off the water and the preserved temple ruins made it feel like I was walking with the ancient Romans. I could easily imagine what it must have been like to walk into the baths many years ago. Watching the projections of the romans and listening about each area of the building made me realize how many men and women from across the Roman Empire gathering, talking, worshipping, and relaxing in a place that felt both luxurious and sacred.

After the tour and a little exploration of the town, we went to the Pump Room, which was another kind of elegance altogether. With its chandelier and live classical music, it felt very elegant and proper. Having afternoon tea there, which is a tradition that seems to define the English experience, was the perfect way to end the day at bath. It felt traditional and elegant and let me say they were the sweetest people to me and making sure I wasnt going to get anything I was allergic to. I had a wonderful experience there.

Bath feels very different from London. London is full of energy, movement, and fast pace moving and has that big city energy. Bath, on the other hand, feels slower, relaxing, and more serene. I loved the energy at Bath, it felt almost like a beach town and had this laid back energy which I enjoy so much! Visiting Bath reminded me of comfort, community, and connection have always been important to people especially the Romans. It reminded me that the Baths aren’t just ruins, they’re a reflection humans and a community that stood strong.
